How I came to know Jesus as my Lord and Savior,

Lots of my cousins visited at Thanksgiving and we all were hanging out in my bedroom.  They were sharing the gospel message and left some Four Spiritual Law booklets.  I was told later that they were targeting my sister.  I don’t remember any of the conversation or their testimonies that were shared that day.

Several days later I was sitting under a hairdryer and picked up one of the Four Spiritual Law booklets and read through it. Under a hairdryer hood there is not much to do.

God had been wooing me for some time.  I attended a Methodist Church and often went with my cousins to their Baptist churches.  My church did not have altar calls for salvation.  When I was in their church, which did have altar calls for salvation, I would desire to go forward but was petrified about walking down that long aisle.  Once they had taken me to the Houston Coliseum to hear a Christian Singer.  The pull on my heart was so strong that day, but fear gripped my heart and I could not go that far away from my family.  What if I got lost?

God’s grace is so great.  He gave me a way to salvation in the privacy of my home, under the hairdryer hood.

I read through the booklet.

Law One – God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life.

Well, as a good little Methodist girl I knew this was true.

Law Two – We are sinful and separated from God. Therefore, we cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for our lives.

Yep, I knew this was true.  I had been seeking a way to get to God.

Law Three – Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for our sin. Through Him alone, we can know God personally and experience God’s love and plan.

This I knew was true.  I hadn’t done too much that was bad, but I knew I was not perfect.

Law Four – We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God’s love and plan for our lives.

So here I knew Law One, Two, and Three were true.  I believed that Jesus Christ died for the sin of the world. John 3:16  But I had never thought of Him doing it for ME. But, I had never made it personal.

And in my 17-year-old self, I would not pray a prayer someone else had written.  So I read the prayer and then prayed from my heart.  And a miracle happened, as it does anytime someone receives Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. I was born again. (John 3:1-8)

Remember, I was all alone and so I did not know that I had just been born again and I did not know how to grow as a Christian.

As a matter of fact, I believed I was a Christian just because I was born in America (a Christian nation) and attended a Christian church (when I felt like it). After the born again experience I knew I was a Christian, not because I was an American or went to church.  I knew in my heart because the Spirit of God that cries, “Abba Father” was in me. (Romans 8:15-16)

I all of a sudden had a desire to read the Bible.  It was about 9 months before I connected with Christian young people for Bible Study.  That was the summer of 1971 and I have never been the same since.

Inviting Jesus to be in my life was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I invite you to read the scriptures below and pray for the Lord to come into your life.

Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for your sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience.

You receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of the will. Pray this prayer, or pray it in your own words from your heart.

“Lord Jesus, I need you.  Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins.  Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. I want to live for you.  Show me the way and lead me in your ways. Amen.”

If you pray this prayer for the first time, send me an email and I will send you some information and pray for you.  (email: karen@karen-mcmullin.com)
